Review: Let’s Play Make-Believe by James Patterson & James O. Born

Let's Play Make-BelieveMake believe I love you…

Both survivors of the divorce wars, Christy and Martin don’t believe in love at first sight and certainly not on a first date. But from the instant they lock eyes, life becomes a sexy, romantic dream come true. That is, until they start playing a strangely intense game of make-believe-a game that’s about to go too far.

The premise behind this book was solid and I actually didn’t mind the story. Overall, the only complaint I have is that it was a bit obvious, in a very Lifetime Movie of the Week, kind of way. Or maybe it just means I’ve watched too many Lifetime movies and had no problem guessing the twist.

Christy is a bit whiny initially. She’s coming off the news of her wealthy husband has decided he’s bored with her or no longer interested in being married, or something… she’s not really sure. All she knows is that he’s put her up in a pricey apartment and plans to take everything away from her. But after she meets Martin, or Marty, she begins to find that she was actually missing out on life all along.

Martin is handsome, but he’s poor and likes to play games. First it’s all a simple dine and dash. But before Christy knows it, the game becomes deadly. As I said, I was able to figure out the twist early on, but I have to admit, they did a good job concealing it. Also, seeing as this is just one hundred and thirteen pages long, it was just the right length for this kind of tale. It’s one of the few short stories I’ve read that has managed to hit the right mark with pacing and page length. The only thing I wish would have been changed is Patterson excessive need to make his books look bigger by having one to two page long chapters.

Overall, this is one of the better BookShots and I would actually recommend it to anyone who enjoys drama.
