Ode to Me

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

My favorite thing about myself? You mean, I must choose only one thing?

Surely, we can bend the rules and I can make a list or write a sonnet about how great I truly am? Right?

Of course, I’m just kidding. I find prompts such as this to be very uncomfortable, especially as I suffer from what so many others do high low self esteem.

My favorite thing about me is my passion for learning. Twenty years ago, I would never have thought I would be an educator. As much as I loved to learn, I had planned to stay in the military until I retired or was forced out. Then again, we know how easy life can change, and here I am.

As a child, school was a safe place for me. I knew I could be successful, and even shine at times. I was desperate for attention and praise. I loved doing projects and researching people or places. I enjoyed learning about space, history, and art. Academia was my safe haven and I thought it would help me get far in life.

I wasn’t wrong. My love for learning has taken me to places I never would have dreamed both real and imagined. It’s also allowed me the privilege to work with students and help them to find some of that same joy in learning. I’m no miracle worker, but I know that each of my students have enjoyed some element of learning in my room… Even if they didn’t realize they were learning.

In fact, the most amazing thing about my job and me, it’s the fact that I am constantly learning. Sometimes it’s silly things like the meaning of new slang terms or origins of internet memes, and sometimes it’s a deeper understanding of something I’ve read several times before.

Anyways, enough about me.

Live. Love. Learn.
