Top Ten Tuesday #32: Reasons to Love Audiobooks

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Several years ago, I was purist when it came to books. I had never even considered the prospect listening to an audiobook. That is until I went on a day trip with my grandmother. I must have been about thirteen or fourteen and she was listening to an audiobook version of The Harvest Moon. I absolutely loved having a book to listen to while in the car and to this day, that particular book is still one of my favorites. So here are a few reasons how/why audiobooks may work for you:

1. Road Trips/Long driving days

When I attended college in Louisiana, I had to drive an hour each way five times a week. That’s a lot of time to be alone in the car with nothing to do and in an area where you might lose radio or cell service at one point. It’s also quite exhausting to commute that much, so I decided to fill my time with audiobooks and the next thing I knew, my drives didn’t seem to last as long. In a way, it kept my mind engaged while still allowing me to drive safely.

2. Housework

I don’t know if any of you are like me, but I try to do a little of this and a little of that throughout the week to keep the house clean. But during the weekends, I still find there is all of this stuff that still needs to be done. If I’m reading a physical book at the moment, I’m stuck reading a chapter or two and then doing the dishes, reading another chapter or two and then vacuuming the living room. While that works, sometimes the back and forth can feel a bit tedious. However, if I am listening to an audiobook, I just throw my headphones on and go. No muss, no fuss. The next thing I know, my house is clean and I made it through a few more discs of my audiobook!

3. Walking

You know the old joke about people who can’t walk, talk and chew gum. Well, I can do that, but sometimes I even try to add in a book… plus music…. But regardless of well I do, I always notice I’m not walking as much as I want to and not reading as much as I want to. This is why I love having audiobooks at my disposal. Just like with cleaning the house, all I have to do is turn on my ipod and go. The next thing I know, I’ve gotten my steps in for the day and still got to enjoy my book!

4. Working on My Blog

Anyone who blogs can understand exactly how much time we all spend on it. Especially if you work with tour companies. I typically spend about one entire day a week just working on the next week’s posts. Of course it’s broken up throughout the week, but still, that’s a lot of time. To make it go quicker and because I’m usually working on coding for my posts (thus, not needing to really think about it), I sometimes like to throw on an audiobook. After all, my blog is about reading and a day a week, I’m not reading just because I’m blogging about books!

5. Space

Let’s face it. As much as we all love our books, they take up a lot of space. Audiobooks on the other hand only take up about half as much space, if you are purchasing them. However, if you are talking about digital space, they take up a ton of space compared to an ebook. This is why I like to put my downloaded audiobooks on CD. They may not be as easily accessible, but they aren’t eating up all of the memory on my computer and ipod, either. Plus, I still have a lot of physical shelf space left over!

6. Safer to Sleep With

I know that might sound a little silly, but I have a friend who has told me more than once, she’s fallen asleep with a book in her hand and it’s dropped on her face. With an audiobook, you can soundly drift away without fear of getting a concussion. The worst that can happen, is that you forget where you were in the book.

I’m afraid that’s all I have for today. Can’t wait to see what you all have listed today!

  1. I love my audiobooks! I have an hour commute to work and again coming home, and they keep me sane while sitting in traffic.

  2. All this plus: Amazing narrators! R.C Bray? Roy Porter? Those guys can bring even the most boring story to life! My TTT

  3. the “safer to sleep with” reason made me laugh out loud…. NOT that I can relate to your friends AT ALL lol 😉 My TTT

  4. I love audio books as well. I sew costumes and travel all over. When I work I devour audio books but when in airport or on plane I do ebooks as well as when I am distressing at night after work or am at home resting.

  5. Oh nice! Those are all very sound reasons!! Though I personally can’t really stay focused on audiobooks. I would be drifting off into lala land most likely. Not because it’s not interesting or anything, but because I’m more of the reader who has to read for themselves. I wish I could do both! That would make car trips tons easier! LOL!

    Have a GREAT day!

  6. Exactly! I’m even listening to an audiobook now… 🙂

    Check out my TTT.

  7. Great list. I too am listening to an audiobook as I type this. And I have chosen to make SF/F Audiobooks my blog “niche.” I actually used this topic for a TTT post last month.
