Today’s theme is all about books to read if you are in the mood for…

Now this is a theme I can have fun with. Instead of listing books for one single mood, I think it would be fun to list a few different types of moods. After all, we’re complex beings and I don’t know anyone who only experiences one mood. So let’s have some fun.

In the mood for bashing your head into the wall?

Then of course you should pick up a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey or as I like to call it, Fifty Shades of Shit. I mean, I don’t know what’s worst, the writing or the fact anyone found this sexy. Now before you assume I’m some kind of prude who has a thing against BDSM, let’s just stop the bus right there. My issues with the sexiness has nothing to do with the type of sex. If anything, I’d much rather see kink in my story than plain old lovey dovey lovemaking. But between the atrocious writing, the lack of consistency, lack of authenticity (in regards to the BDSM lifestyle) and of course, the tampon scene, I’d have to say I just don’t get the appeal. Trust me, if you are feeling kinky, I’ll have some great referrals for you in this post.

Craving some fuzzy feelings?

Any time you read a Nicholas Sparks book, you have to be prepared to have tissues on standby for the tearful moments. However, as anyone who has ever read my thoughts on romance books, you’ll know that I am a sucker for his work. Sure, it’s falling into more of a pattern with his story telling, but the thing about his books is they always give me hope. As someone who has basically given up on the possibility finding love, it’s nice to be reminded of how good the act of falling in love can be. I always go back and forth between which one is my favorite. For this one, I think Dear John is the one that gives me so many fuzzy feelings and though it’s one of the only books where the two lovebirds don’t wind up together, the end result is beautiful and heartwarming.

Trying to scare yourself silly (or atleast creep yourself out)?

I know Edgar Allan Poe is controversial among readers. Some people absolutely love his work, others just don’t get it. For me, I think Poe is the reason I have such a hard time finding literature that I find to be horrifying. I read his complete works as a child, because I was one of those kids that liked the macabre and was a huge fan of horror movies. The truth is, I like things that are not only creepy, but that also leave you thinking. Say what you will about Poe, but there are some of those aha moments in his stories. There’s a depth that only someone who is truly disturbed and creative could even think of. And this depth leads the reader to be drawn into the story in a way that very few authors can do.

Ready to immerse yourself into a magical world?

There’s no way I could do a list like this and not find a way to list Harry Potter. You know, it’s funny, I never knew there were people who didn’t like this series. But for me, I can’t help but still love it. I suppose part of it is because my introduction to the books came at the end of my high school years. In a way, it’s like it was my last grasp at reclaiming the awe and imagination I experienced during my childhood. I suppose you could say, this series is the bridge between my childhood becoming an adult. I truly appreciated that the story grew with each book and felt a deep respect for the world J.K. Rowling created.

Thinking you have the worst family ever?

Have you ever had one of those days where you just can’t stand the people in your family? Maybe they don’t understand you or you don’t feel like you fit in? Well, the good news is that Flowers in the Attic features a family far more messed up than yours. For one, the poor child spend three years locked away in the attic. Why? Because their selfish, greedy mother is far too concerned with getting her inheritance from her father’s death, than the well being of her children. The grandmother is hardly a peach, as she whips her grown daughter, pours tar in her granddaughter’s hair and then beats her eldest grandson. Did I mention the eldest boy raping his sister? Must have slipped my mind because I was going to tell you about how the mother and grandmother devised a plan to rid the attic of its “vermin” with rat poisoned-laced donuts. And this is only book one of the series.

When you have an itch to do some retail therapy?

With the exception of movies and books, I’m not a big shopper. However, I do know they have the stereotypes of people being obsessed with shoes, purses, watches, etc. If you are one of those people, maybe you should consider reading the Confessions of a Shopholic series before you start wearing out that credit card. I mean, I get it. You probably don’t have a shopping problem. But not only will you shake your head at the insane and obsessive spending, but you will find yourself laughing your ass off. Who knows, at the very least, maybe it’ll help you with some tips on the many excuses you can use to avoid your creditors?

In the mood for something a bit kinky?

I have two great suggestions for this mood.

If you aren’t squeamish when it comes to BDSM and can see that the act of being a professional dominatrix doesn’t necessarily make one a prostitute, then you will love The Original Sinners. I’m not guaranteeing that you will enjoy all of it. There are a few scenes that I know have made some of the most open-minded of my friends, extremely uncomfortable. However, Reisz’s writing is smart, funny and hot, hot, hot. She’s not afraid to push the boundaries and explore the many different aspects of the lifestyle. She brings to light a lot of different types of sexual preferences and I think that’s probably one of my favorite things about her books. After all, what other author would be willing to make a Catholic priest the best dom in the lifestyle and willing to explore all aspects of the human sexual nature?

If my first recommendation is too much for you, then I would suggest you check out Deep. Set in the future, when deep space exploration is a common occurrence, the cadets find themselves fighting to complete the hardest training program on Station Six. But it’s more than just the training, but also the reputation of the station for having wild, erotic hazing rituals and sadomasochistic games. All of which turns out to be true. But for the main character, it’s the act of not only falling in love, but also learning to trust her trainer that consumes her. It’s more than just an erotic book, but by the same point, it’s more than a romance novel.

Need a good cry?

Sometimes, you just need a good cry to get you through the day. Especially when it comes wrapped up in a great novel. For me, I have to say The Book Thief is probably one of the best tear jerkers I have ever read. For one, it’s a phenomenal story about the life of a town, particularly one family during the rise of Nazi Germany and the beginning of World War II. Given the subject manner, it’s easy to see how many horribly tragic things can occur throughout this book. Hell, I would even dare to say this is one of the best novels I’ve read in my life. I would suggest this book to anyone regardless of their mood.

Because you’re in the mood for coffee (and some great laughs)!

Cozy mysteries have a thing for food and coffee. This particular series features a ton of laughs alongside with your daily dose of caffeine. Trust me, when you read a man nearly smothered to death by a woman’s big old breast or about a good ole fashioned redneck funeral full of flying fist and people falling into the grave, you can’t help but burst out laughing. This kind of smart and funny writing can really make a book and for me, that’s what makes this book worth checking out.
