Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly blog hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Today’s theme is supposed to be a Valentine’s Day themed post. Since I’m not a huge fan of romance, I figured I’d go with those books that won’t be making your Valentine’s Day reading list, but are still great reads.
1. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Now come on. There’s nothing more romantic than setting up your husband for your disappearance on your 5th anniversary.
2. Paper Towns by John Green
Who doesn’t want to go searching for the girl of their dream, only to have their little heart squashed when you discover she never cared about you?
3. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
After the murder/disappearance of their youngest daughter, an entire family falls to pieces as they try to grieve for their loss. Though a touching and haunting story, there’s nothing creepier than an eternal 12 year old ghost slipping into someone else’s body to have sex with the first boy she had a crush on.
4. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This is a beautiful and tragic story about a little girl’s experience during World War II Germany. But as a Valentine’s Day read, it might leave you wanting to tear your heart out.
5. The Breakup Bible by Melissa Kantor
Enough said…
6. 172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad
Kind of hard to make a budding relationship work when something is trying to kill you.
7. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
This tragic story is a recollection of the main character’s childhood in Kabul, Afghanistan. A day that should have been a victory for him, ends up in tragedy as he finds his best friend being tortured by a group of local boys.
Anyways, that’s all I have for today folks! Can’t wait to see your Valentine’s Day themed posts.
Being a non-Valentine’s Day person myself, I really enjoyed this post! Great picks!
Thanks!
Hahahahaha! Love your spin on the topic! Gone Girl pretty much terrified me and made me never want to trust another person ever again.
haha, this is a fun take on this topic! I would definitely not want to spend valentine’s day in tears from reading The Book Thief again 🙂 great picks!
here’s my ttt!
Yeah, I threw that one in because there’s lots of love in it, but it’s not romantic. It’s heartfelt, touching and yet, so terribly tragic. Such a beautiful story.
I love your topic spin! I did something similar and somehow totally forgot Gone Girl! Talk about the opposite of romantic!
Ooh I wanna read 172 hours on the moon! My TTT.
Can’t wait to see you what you think once you get a chance to check it out.
hahahaha!! I love your descriptions! hilarious! My TTT
That’s what I get for trying to write them while halfway awake! LMAO
LOL!
I ❤ The Lovely Bones! It's an amazing book, and an even better movie! 🙂
Great TOP 10!
My TTT! 🙂
Dreamland Review.
Love your theme / list! Here’s my TTT
I’m definitely not one for romance either, so it’s great to see lists like these. What I loved even more with Paper Towns is that it’s all Q’s fault, really : he built this idea of Margo in his head, and then was disappointed when he turned out to be wrong. There’s a lesson to be learned here haha
Hey, we’ve all been there. I had exes that I built up and looking back, there were so many signs that they really weren’t as great as I thought. Puppy love does that. 😛
