25 Days of Christmas #18: When Do You Open Gifts?

We don’t have a set day/time that we open presents. Some years, we do it on Christmas Eve and some years, we open them first thing in the morning.

Last year, I was working Christmas night, so I made a plan to sneak downstairs at midnight and slam the front door. My son was asleep on the couch, so I pretended Santa had just stopped by to visit. His eyes grew wide and we leaned out the front door to yell Merry Christmas to Santa as he “drove off.” Then we opened presents and headed over to Denny’s for breakfast. It wasn’t ideal, but with my work schedule, I had to do what I had to do.

  1. Awwwww!!! That’s so fun! I bet your son still remembers that Christmas. 🙂

    • I hope so. I thought it would be a great thing to do for him. I hope it’s one of those memories like I have of my mom and stepfather surprising me by opening up several of those glow sticks and spraying them all over the wall one day. Of course, they regretted it when it left the white paint looking like it had dirty spots the next day, but it’s the gesture and my fond memory of it that counts.

  2. We open presents Christmas morning. No exceptions.

    • There’s nothing wrong with that. With it just being the two of us, sometimes it just works out better for us to do it Christmas Eve. That way he can enjoy all of his new stuff and we can spend the rest of the time watching Christmas movies/cartoons and playing with his new toys/games.
