The Generosity of a Child

2013-09-30 12.34.03

Cameron has a bit of an aversion to foods with sauces on or in them. He will not eat normal meals like mac ‘n cheese or even spaghetti for me. However, he’s obsessed with McDonald’s. Of course, much like normal children, he cares more about the toy than the food. Last night he came home from seeing his grandfather and asked to go to McDonald’s. I simply told him no. His face twisted into this sad look and he asked the age old question every parent hates: Why? So, I told him the truth, that I didn’t have the money to take him to go get a Happy Meal. As soon as I said that, he ran off into his room. I wasn’t surprised by his reaction, he tends to run off into the bedroom and throws a fit when I say no.

But not this time.  He actually came back out a few minutes later, his face full of pride as he dumps a handful of change and says “Now we have money.” It was enough to bring tears to my eyes. Now, of course, he was offering the money towards getting him a Happy Meal, but it was the act that made me cry.

Just before his grandfather had dropped, I had been crying as I looked through job applications online and tried to figure out how we were going to pay our bills this month. So to see him trying to help me out, even if it was for something he wanted, was just heartbreaking. But that only proves he’s truly a sweet kid.
